He is an unlikely assortment of contradictions; a romantic and realist, yet writes in a genre, reserved, for the most part, for the feminine in both readership and writing.
Meet Robert Gilbert, a Chicago novelist, with a definite love for the Southwest, which is the setting for his first novel, Megan's Love, a heart thrilling romance set in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. It is a story full of as much shadow and light as the region it portrays.
So how does a guy, living in a bedroom community of Chicago, decide to write a romance?
"I told myself that when I turned fifty, I would start to write my first book. First, I took a shot at Westerns, which didn't go well, to say the least. Then a friend suggested I try writing romance. I gave it some time and then seriously started to develop Megan's Love, initially over a nine month period with lots of stops and starts. I would work on it nightly from 1 a.m. far into the early morning hours after my night shift. My writing, on lined paper, was done in the back production area at work where I would lose myself to the love of storytelling."
